Design and hardware
I do have to note that the device weighs around 3.42 lbs which makes it lightweight and very portable. The design is similar to the other Chromebooks from Acer, but now you have a more premium appeal thanks to the aluminum encasing. The device’s exterior is smoother which is great, abut that also makes it a lot slippery, which can be a downside if you don’t have a good grip.
Another downside is that the speakers for this device can be found right at the bottom. That’s very bad considering the fact that you might be keeping it on your lap. The Acer Chromebook 14 CB3-431-C5FM isn’t a loud device for sure and this poor design decision is the main reason for that.
The keyboard is larger and the touchpad is larger as well. This does provide a variety of interesting options for those that write or use the keyboard a lot but the touchpad is also more suitable for the creative minds. Response time for these is very good, although the touchpad might be a little stiff at times. It’s still a very good option for those that want portability and great battery life, but with some trade-offs for sure.
Storage-wise, the device is very fast but the limited storage can be a problem. Thankfully, you can store most of the items you want with Google Drive and other services online so if you want to use the device for regular services this is a great investment. I also have to note that the display is bright and it performs very well. Doesn’t stand out but it’s not bad at all, in fact you get pristine quality when you run 1080p content.
The software works great and here you can find the standard Chrome OS experience. The performance is great with most apps, the response time is very fast so in the end you can’t really ask for more from this particular device.
Should I Buy It?
As a whole, I feel that the Acer Chromebook 14 CB3-431-C5FM is a very good device. It does have a few issues with the sound design and the lack of an SD card slot, but it does have 4GB of RAM, a fast storage and great display. It also features a stellar battery life of close to 12 hours, which everyone will appreciate and enjoy. You should totally check it out, this is a great device that’s well worth the investment!
I am writing this review on the chromebook 14! This is by far the best sub $500 chromebook! Thin, lightweight and attractive design coupled with a snappy Intel Celeron processor and 4gb of ram make for a great Chrome OS experience – Blake
Owned this Chromebook for about month. Build quality, screen resolution and brightness are excellent. – Robert
Relatively speaking, this ain’t your grandfather’s Chromebook! Much faster response, terrific wifi reception, and amazingly clear screen resolution make this one fine product
